Privacy Policy

Effective Date: January 1, 2025Last Updated: January 1, 2025

1. Introduction

demographics.fyi ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting the privacy of everyone who uses our platform. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect information when you visit or interact with demographics.fyi.

Our platform collects anonymous workplace demographics data from tech employees to provide transparent diversity, retention, and culture insights across the industry. This policy covers all data collected through our website, APIs, and related services.

By using demographics.fyi, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use our services.

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

a. Submission Data

When you submit workplace demographics data, we collect anonymous information including race, gender identity, age range, job level, department, and workplace culture signals. No personally identifiable information (PII) is collected as part of any submission. Submissions are designed to be structurally anonymous -- we do not collect your name, employee ID, email address, or any other identifier alongside submission data.

b. Account Data (Optional)

If you choose to create an account to track your submissions, we collect your email address. Account creation is entirely optional and is not required to submit data or use the platform.

c. Usage Data

We collect standard analytics data to understand how our platform is used. This includes page views, device type, browser type, referring pages, and session duration. We do not use third-party trackers or advertising analytics platforms. All usage analytics are processed using privacy-respecting, first-party tooling.

d. Rate Limiting Data

To prevent abuse and ensure data integrity, we store cryptographic hashes of IP addresses (not raw IP addresses) on a temporary basis. These hashes are used solely for rate limiting and cannot be reversed to obtain the original IP address.

3. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • Aggregate company scores: Submission data is aggregated to calculate diversity, retention, and culture scores for each company tracked on the platform.
  • Display anonymized statistics: We present aggregated, anonymized demographic breakdowns and trends on company profile pages and rankings.
  • Improve the platform: Usage data helps us understand how visitors interact with demographics.fyi so we can improve the user experience, fix issues, and prioritize new features.
  • Prevent abuse: Rate limiting data is used to detect and prevent spam submissions, bot activity, and other forms of platform abuse that could compromise data integrity.

4. Data Anonymization

Protecting the anonymity of submitters is a core principle of demographics.fyi. We have implemented multiple safeguards to ensure that individual submissions cannot be traced back to specific people:

  • Submissions contain no personally identifiable information. There is no technical mechanism to link a submission to an individual employee.
  • We do not perform employer verification or any identity verification process that could reveal who submitted data.
  • IP address hashes used for rate limiting are rotated on a regular cycle and permanently deleted after 30 days. These hashes are never associated with submission content.
  • Where a demographic category for a given company has too few submissions to ensure anonymity, we withhold that data from public display to prevent potential re-identification.

5. Data Sharing

We take a strict approach to data sharing:

  • We do not sell data. We have never sold user data, and we will never sell user data to third parties, advertisers, data brokers, or any other entity.
  • Aggregate statistics are public. The aggregated, anonymized company scores and demographic breakdowns displayed on demographics.fyi are publicly accessible. This is the core purpose of the platform.
  • Individual submissions are never shared. Raw individual submission records are never disclosed, shared, or made available to any third party, including the companies being reviewed.
  • Law enforcement requests: We will only disclose information in response to valid legal process, such as a court order or subpoena. We will challenge any requests that we believe are overly broad, vague, or otherwise improper. Because submission data contains no PII, there is inherently limited information we could provide in response to any such request.

6. Data Retention

Our data retention practices are as follows:

  • Submission data is retained indefinitely. Because this data is fully anonymous and contains no personally identifiable information, it does not pose a privacy risk through long-term storage. Retaining it allows us to provide accurate historical trends and comprehensive company profiles.
  • Account data (email address) is retained for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated account data at any time, and we will process such requests within 30 days.
  • Rate limiting data (IP address hashes) is automatically and permanently deleted after 30 days.

7. Your Rights

You have the following rights regarding your data on demographics.fyi:

  • Access: You may request a copy of any personal data we hold about you (limited to account data, if applicable).
  • Deletion: You may request deletion of your account and all associated personal data at any time. Note that anonymous submission data cannot be attributed to you and therefore cannot be specifically deleted.
  • Opt out of analytics: You may opt out of usage analytics collection through your browser settings or by using standard Do Not Track signals, which we honor.
  • Data export: You may request an export of any personal data associated with your account in a machine-readable format.

GDPR Compliance

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object. Our lawful basis for processing account data is consent; for usage data, it is legitimate interest. To exercise any GDPR rights, please contact us at the email address below.

CCPA Compliance

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) grants you the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of any sale of personal information. As stated above, we do not sell personal information. To exercise any CCPA rights, please contact us at the email address below.

8. Security

We take the security of your data seriously and have implemented multiple layers of protection:

  • Encryption in transit: All data transmitted between your browser and our servers is encrypted using TLS (Transport Layer Security).
  • Encryption at rest: Stored data is encrypted at rest using industry-standard encryption algorithms.
  • Regular security audits: We conduct periodic security reviews and audits to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.
  • Minimal PII exposure: Because submission data contains no personally identifiable information by design, the impact of any potential data breach is significantly minimized. There is no PII in the core dataset that could be exposed.

9. Cookies

demographics.fyi uses only essential cookies that are strictly necessary for the platform to function:

  • Session cookies: Used to maintain your session state if you are logged into an account.
  • Theme preference: A cookie to remember your selected display theme (light or dark mode) across visits.

We do not use advertising cookies, tracking cookies, or any third-party cookies. We do not participate in any advertising networks or cross-site tracking programs.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will:

  • Post the updated policy on this page with a revised "Last Updated" date.
  • Notify registered users via email of any material changes at least 14 days before they take effect.
  • Display a prominent notice on the platform for all visitors when significant changes are made.
